Legal Services of the Hudson Valley is the sole full-service civil service provider for the seven counties of the Hudson Valley, including Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan. When a crisis occurs and people who cannot afford a lawyer face legal problems due to job loss, illness or unfair denial of benefits, they often don`t know where to turn or where to get legal advice. These people often get lost in the justice system, thwarted by unknown procedures and confusing processes and documents. Our service area includes County Ulster (in addition to Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester). We have an office at 101 Hurley Avenue in Kingston, in addition to 5 other offices in our service area. We need volunteers with paralegal skills and lawyers who are willing to take a case from us to deal with pro bono. We also need a volunteer trained in the art of web setup and design. We hope you will join us as we continue this fight. Under the Legal Aid Act, legal aid may be granted to any person detained in a police station, prison or similar place. The Act also provides that a legal aid certificate is issued to the person to whom legal aid is granted, which may be determined for the preparation and conduct of his or her defence. The Legal Aid Act led to the creation of the Legal Aid Clinic in 1971. According to the law, any person who has sufficient grounds to initiate or defend legal proceedings is not prevented from doing so due to lack of resources. We always need compassionate people who are willing to volunteer for evenings, weekends and holidays. Upon completion of a 30-hour training program, volunteers are certified as rape counselors and can help innocent victims of violence in our community.
