The English language contains a huge and ever-increasing number of words. Expanding your vocabulary by learning new words may seem overwhelming, but if you know the common prefixes and suffixes of English, you`ll understand many more words. Mastering general prefixes and suffixes is like learning code. Once you`ve cracked the code, you can not only spell the words more correctly, but you can also recognize and maybe even define unknown words. A prefix is a part of a word that is added to the beginning of a word to create a new meaning. Consider the general prefixes in Table 4.2 «General Prefixes.» The main rule to keep in mind when adding a prefix to a word is not to add letters or omit letters. For examples of this rule, see Table 4.2 «Common Prefixes.» Write a paragraph that describes one of your life goals. Add five words with prefixes and five words with suffixes. Exchange documents with a classmate and circle prefixes and suffixes in your classmate`s work. Correct any misspelled prefixes or suffixes. If a particular response arouses a lot of interest on the site today, it can be highlighted in orange. If the word ends with this or , keep the e silent if the suffix begins with a or o.
